I am extremely excited for the upcoming season here at Island View Golf Centre! We have a brand new Golf Academy with programs for all ages, and all levels of golfers. Also, we have many events scheduled throughout the year that will be both fun and entertaining. The most exciting thing being our new Membership program which will offer customers the chance to hit unlimited golf balls, seven days a week throughout the year! The Driving Range, and some work at home or in the gym can be your biggest ally during the winter months to keep your golf swing in shape. As a CPGA instructor, I encourage and emphasize the importance of keeping your swing tuned and ready, throughout the year, so that your game is in tip-top shape for the upcoming golf season. Below are some simple, yet very effective techniques for keeping the body prepped and ready in the offseason.

Stretching- Some basic stretches will go a long way in maintaining a limber golfing body. In Figure 1, I am demonstrating a basic neck stretch. Simply tilt your head to one side, and pull gently with your hand until you feel a light stretch down the side of your neck. Hold for 10 seconds then repeat on the other side. Next, to stretch out your shoulders as demonstrated in Figures 2 and 3, grab a golf club and hold the clubhead in one hand and make as though you’re going to scratch your back. Take hold of the other side of the club with your other hand, and pull down gently and hold. Once you’ve done that, pull up the other way. This is an excellent stretch for the shoulders. Finally, a great stretch for the back is shown in Figure 4. Simply hold a golf club in either hand and raise it to the sky. Keep the club above your head for a count of 5, then lower the club behind you feeling another good stretch in the shoulders. From there bring the club back up above your head, then lower it down in front of you. Again hold for a count of 5.

Swing a Golf Club- As shown in Figure 5, take 2 clubs and put the clubs, grip end up, together. From there take a few swings back and through. Again this only needs to be done about 10 minutes each day. This will keep your swing and golf muscles loose in the offseason. Finally, for best results be sure to hit golf balls at least once a week during the off season (preferably at Island View Golf Centre)!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

“It takes the hammer of persistence to drive the nail of success.”
          -John Mason

2006 was definitely a year to remember. The economy’s been red hot with unemployment hovering around 3%, the housing market went through the roof, and Island View put up the highest driving range nets in Canada!

To top it all off, we had a winter that brought back memories of the blizzard of 1996. One observation I made during the snowstorm was the outstanding work ethic that the people of the Saanich Peninsula posses; it took less than 2 days before majority of the driveways were cleared!

Island View is excited to tee off the New Year of 2007 with lots of impressive projects starting up including our memberships and golf academy that will be fun, educational, and rewarding. We look forward to continuing to provide the Island with the #1 Golf Practice Facility, promoting the game, and improving our customer’s scores.
