What an excellent golf month we have had this year. Lots of beautiful golf weather and hopefully more to come. Things to report:
a. On September 28th Island View held it's 2nd Annual Golf Event. This year we held the tournament again at Glen Meadows Golf & C.C. The course was in splendid condition and all participants had a great time. Incredibly four teams were tied for first place. The eventual team winners were the team of Tom Murphy, Don Gustafson, Sean Samoluk and Allan Carter. Well done lads! Individual awards were given to Cathy McIntyre and Tom from 5 Star for their marksmanship on the Par 3 holes. Long Drive honors went to Sean Samoluk, Tom from 5 Star, and Allan Carter. The delightful evening was made complete by a super buffet dinner at the Waddling Dog Pub. Many thanks to Manfred Renz (the F & B Manager) and to all who
played!
b. Shortly the range will be installing a swing mirror (at the end of the range) to help all those who want to see their back swings in motion. It should be a really cool addition to the
range.
c. This winter we will be adding more short shot targets to the range. Many of our customers have requested more close in targets. They should be installed by the end of
October.
d. Hoping you all checked out our new Suggestion Box at the ball machine. We want your input on how to make Island View a better facility. We believe some of the best ideas we get are submitted by our
customers.
e. A good number of our customers have been asking about our Hours of Operation this winter. Currently we are reviewing our options and will have something posted in a week or so. Until then 9 to 9 during the week, and 8-9 on the weekends plus
holidays.
Cheers,
Scott

Many of my students ask me the question, as it relates to the shortgame: When are you supposed to "Pitch" and when are you supposed to "Chip"? Before I answer this question, let's look at the difference between the two shortgame techniques.
PIC 1 PIC
2
PIC 3
Notice the golfer in Pic 1. She has a narrow stance, the ball position is off her BACK FOOT, her hands are forward of the ball, and a little more weight is set towards her FRONT FOOT. This is a setup designed for a relatively short shot with a short iron (8,9, Pitching Wedge). From there the swing back and through is relatively short as well. When do we use this shot? Take a look at Pic 4. There are two concentric circles. The red circle is an area lets say 20 feet wide circling the putting surface. This Zone will be your CHIPPING Zone. Anything inside that circle, except for the bunkers, you will use the chipping setup, and chipping stroke.
Now referring back to
the picture to the left, the blue circle extending out further will be another zone, let's say anywhere from 20 feet to 60 yards away from the green. In this zone you will be using what is called a PITCH shot, as depicted in Pics 2 and 3. In essence this is a mini-swing. This shot will be played with a Pitching Wedge or Sand Wedge. This mini-swing will give you a little bit more loft on your shot and allow you to land your ball softly near the
hole. It will take practice to learn and ingrain the technique of the shots mentioned, but more importantly, it will take experience to learn WHEN and WHERE to use each of these shots. With the help of these visuals you will eventually be able to assess pretty quickly when to use each shot, and give yourself the best chance to get the ball close!
Cheers,
Andrew
