GOLF FACTS OF THE MONTH:

-Only 22% of golfers regularly break 90 for 18 holes.

-Most widely used golf ball on the PGA, LPGA, and Champions tours: The Titleist Pro V1

- The masters prohibits TV announcers from ever mentioning prize money.

-Youngest player ever to qualify for the PGA Tour: Ty Tryon, at age 17.

Well, in just a few short weeks from now the golf season will be in full swing. Are you getting ready? Is this the year you’re going to try and move your game to the next level? Perhaps as a helping hand I might suggest a few ideas and thoughts as to how to go about it! They are:

A. Try to understand and evaluate where you believe the weaknesses are in your game. For example, if your short game has been letting you down, perhaps this is an area which you need to pay particular attention on. Likewise with the long or mid game. Keep stats of your rounds, how many drives in the fairway, how many “green in regulation”, how many putts, how many up’s and downs. All good stuff! The numbers will tell the complete story. Best of all the statistics will help you understand where you are losing those precious strokes.

B. Practice….as Ben Hogan said, “ the more I practice the luckier I get!” My recommendation with regard to practice is to make your practice time productive. Shoot to a designated target and try a good variety of clubs during the session, not just the driver. Take your time. Pay particular attention to your alignment and set-up. Create a check list…step 1, step 2, step 3, etc. Put things in order, it’s easier to remember. If you have got a digital camera, take a mini video (with a buddy) of your swing…compare it to the pros….you be the judge!

C. If your game isn’t great and you’re frustrated, see your CPGA Golf Professional… believe me he can help. Just a simple spring warm-up lesson will give you some great stuff to think about and principles to apply during your practice and play time.

Anyhow, wishing you all the best of luck and a great golf year! See you on the links!

Cheers,

Scott

In my lessons I get the following question many times: “How high should I tee up my Driver?” I guess there are many schools of thought on this, but here are some tips for teeing up, and setting up so that you can hit that drive well past your buddies.

A few years ago, as the Mega-Size Driver craze started, many people were teeing their ball much higher than normal. Teeing it high is crucial to be able to hit the ball in the air and create some lift and hang time, and produce a long drive. However, I think there’s a point where the ball can be too high for most players. Here’s what you do:

1. Tee up the ball so that the ball is roughly two inches from the ground.

2. Take your driver and set the club behind the ball square to your target line. Make sure that the equator of the ball matches up with the TOP LINE of your driver. Most drivers will have an aiming arrow or line on the top of the clubhead.

3. Adjust the tee height accordingly to match the ball and top line up, and you’re ready to go.

4. Finally, make sure you play the ball even with your front heel, to ensure hitting the ball on the upswing, and get ready to hit those towering, Tigeresque tee-shots!!

In January I took a trip to Hawaii and is it ever a beautiful place! For a relatively small area, the Islands are incredibly diverse, full of history and have a lot of stuff going on. I wanted to share with you some of the observations and experiences I had in my journey there.

The golf there is amazing! I had a chance to play Kapalua Golf Course right after the Mercedes open and see how I stacked up against the pros. It was unbelievably difficult! There were no flat lies, a 3-club wind, and greens similar to a skating rink. I left with a score of 110 and a newfound respect for the pros!

The medium house price in Maui was over $800,000! They boomed the same time as Victoria and affordable housing is a huge issue there. Of course the developers are working hard to keep up with this demand. When I was there an 11,000 home subdivision was going before council. To put that in perspective, if approved, it would encompass its own school district!

Alternative energy is huge in Hawaii and they are way ahead of Victoria in that field. Driving through neighborhoods you see solar panels everywhere! In fact, they have the highest per capita ratio of solar panels and are 2nd only to California in wind power.

I encourage anyone who hasn’t yet visited Hawaii to take a trip down there and see the breathtaking views, amazing houses, alternative energy usage, and play the amazing golf tracks (of course).

I see many amateurs using clubs that are not fitted for their swing, and therefore they try to fit their swing to the golf club. That leads to poor golf.

I strongly recommend that a CPGA professional fits your clubs properly. What you want to look for are:

  • Flex of the shaft
  • Kick point
  • Size of the grip
  • Length of the club.

Once you get the right club that is fitted for your swing, you have no excuse about your golf equipment!
