GOLF JOKES OF THE MONTH

For most of the round the golfer had argued with his caddy about club selection, but the caddy always prevailed.

Finally on the 17th hole, a 185-yard par three into the wind, the caddy handed the golfer a 4-wood and the golfer reacted.

"I think it's a 3-iron," said the golfer.

"No, sir it's a 4-wood," said the caddy.

"Nope, it's definitely a 3-iron."

So the golfer set up, took the 3-iron back slowly, and struck the ball perfectly. It tore through the wind, hit softly on the front of the green, and rolled up two feet short of the pin.

"See," said the caddy. "I told you it wasn't enough club."

Bill and Ralph step up to the first tee box. Bill says, "Hey, guess what! I got a set of golf clubs for my wife!" Ralph replies enthusiastically, "What a great trade!"

______________

A recent study has revealed that a hardy golfer walks approximately 900 miles per year. Another study has revealed that a hardy golfer drinks on an average 22 gallons of beer each golf season.

We can safely conclude that a hardy golfer gets approximately 41 miles per gallon!

a. Always get to the course early if you can. If you have to rush, don't go!

b. Always hit a few balls before you play. It DOES make a huge difference!

c. Always hit your highest percentage club off the first tee. A good start is essential!

d. Always play for something if you can. Even a coffee. You will concentrate better!

e. Always tee up the ball if you can in the teeing area. Jack Nicklaus said so!

f.. Always keep your grips and glove dry. Do anything to keep them dry! Anything!

g. Always keep the grooves on your clubs clean. It's all about SPIN baby!

h. Always check your spikes to ensure you do not slip. The game is tough enough!

i. Always keep score. The game is all about SCORE! Get a handicap too brother!

j. Always keep your cool. Bad temper and golf are an explosive mix!

k. Always use great care hitting out of trouble. Most folks don't!

l. Always hit a provisional ball. It's a long walk plus it's free practice!

m. Always practice with all clubs. Not just the driver! It's a 14 club game!

n. Always back away from the ball if you are uncomfortable. Always!

o. Always put your clubs away dry. Never wet! Rust destroys clubs!

p. Always use a putter you like. If you hate it, it probably hates you!

q. Always check that the pin is in straight. Crooked pins drive me nuts!

r. Always shake hands when you complete your game. It's a must!

s. Always try to play at 80% power. You will look for less balls!

t. Always try to know the basic rules. They can help you too!

u. Always fix your ball mark, plus one other. Never, ever, ever, forget!

v. Always replace your divot. Never, ever, ever, forget!

w. Always hit the highest percentage shot. PLAY SMART! You are not Tiger!

x. Always stay after the round for a cold beer or a coffee. Beer is better!

y. Always try to introduce your KIDS to the game. A wonderful thing to do!

z. Always have fun! The game is one hell of a ride!

MILTON FRIEDMAN QUOTES OF THE MONTH

(July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) An American Nobel Laureate economist and public intellectual.

Concentrated power is not rendered harmless by the good intentions of those who create it.

I am favor of cutting taxes under any circumstances and for any excuse, for any reason, whenever it's possible.

I'm in favor of legalizing drugs. According to my values system, if people want to kill themselves, they have every right to do so. Most of the harm that comes from drugs is because they are illegal.

If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand.

Many people want the government to protect the consumer. A much more urgent problem is to protect the consumer from the government.

Most economic fallacies derive from the tendency to assume that there is a fixed pie, that one party can gain only at the expense of another.

The most important single central fact about a free market is that no exchange takes place unless both parties benefit.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

We have a system that increasingly taxes work and subsidizes nonwork.

It’s my pleasure to announce Island View’s Long Drive Contest is happening Sunday, June 22nd!

HANDICAP SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE!

Now that we’re approaching the heart of the golf season, I want to offer a few tips on how to practice effectively during the year.

If you’re an avid golfer, you’ve probably played a few rounds by now, and hopefully your swing is grooved and you’re playing some good golf. If this is the case, you want to practice how you’re going to play on the golf course. Here are a few things I would suggest doing:

1. ALWAYS have a target. Island View’s range is a beautiful thing when it comes to practicing the way you’re going to play. There are targets galore, not only in the form of flags and yardage markers, but also great big trees, and rooftops in the far distance.

2. Constantly change your target on every shot, so that you’re mimicking the variety of shots you’ll have on the golf course. If you have a routine, stick to that routine on every shot. If you don’t have a routine, then what better place to develop one on the range?

3. DON’T get too much into rapid-fire mode. This can be good if you’re working on something in your swing, and want to groove it quicker. But for the good player, you want to take your time with every shot, and have a purpose with that shot, just as you would on the golf course.

For those of you out there who might be struggling with your games, while the above tips are eventually important as well, you need to focus on some fundamental things in your swings that might not be up to speed. If this is the case, you will need to have a buddy look at your swing, or even do a video analysis of your swing. If you’ve done those things, and you are still struggling, we can answer any questions you might have about your swing, or any other part of your game.

Finally, on another note, I feel strongly about the Victoria golf community supporting the stop on the Canadian tour. The Victoria Open has a strong history, with lots of great players winning the event, and going on to great golf playing careers. A Canadian tour stop is a big deal in a lot of other cities in Canada, and it should be no different here in Victoria. With the affiliation the Canadian tour has made with Uplands over the next five years, let’s show the Canadian tour that they didn’t make a mistake, and that the Victoria Open can be a premiere event on tour for many years to come!

How is your Grip?

Hyo Sang Yoon
hyo@islandviewgolf.com

How is your grip? Are you gripping the club right? Are you sure you have a right grip that will take your game to next level? If you are still spraying the ball everywhere on the course, you might want to check your grip again carefully, because I believe almost 90% of golfers problems come from not gripping the club right.

There are a few things you’ve got to watch out for when you are gripping the club

1. Make sure you are gripping the club in the fingers, not in the palms.

2. When you are gripping your left hand, you should be able to see at least two knuckles, which will place the V pointing towards the right shoulder. If you don’t see those two knuckles that means your left hand grip is too weak.

3. When you are gripping your right hand, make sure right hands folds over your left thumb, which means your left thumb should not be visible.

4. Don’t grip it too tightly, because people tend to grip it too hard. I would say 6 out of a 10 scale.

If you were gripping the club wrong before, it will probably feel very uncomfortable when you try to change your grip. It will take time to get comfortable again. So give yourself a day or two to get use to the new grip, instead of going back to your bad old grip you had before.

Trust me, with the correct grip, you are going hit it longer and straighter!
