To commemorate the New Year, I’m going to put an end to all the rumors. It’s true! I am officially running for Mayor of Central Saanich!
What motivated me to put my name forward?
- My family has a huge vested interest in the municipality, as we own two companies (Five Star Paving and Island View Golf Centre) and my Grandma and myself live out here.
- The untapped potential that Brentwood Bay and Saanichton Village have to be more vibrant, bustling, village centers.
- The residents of Central Saanich that have voiced their concerns with the current Municipal Government.
- The belief that we can do better.
My platform addresses all these issues and more, the 3 Pillars of the Campaign being:
1. Rejuvenation of Brentwood Bay and Saanichton Village
2. Fair and Equal Treatment of All Citizens of Central Saanich
3. Efficient, Responsible Management of Tax Payers
Dollars
This will not be your typical political campaign. We’ve decided to do politics differently, based around the idea that voters appreciate honesty and transparency over secrecy and deception. Therefore, this campaign will be 100% Transparent giving the voters a crystal clear, unique option for the future of Central
Saanich.
We’re going to accomplish this transparency through the website
(www.seanformayor.com). On this website, you’ll find everything you want to know about me and the vision for Central Saanich I represent. It’s constantly updated as the campaign moves forward, so check up on it often to see what’s happening in the
municipality!
I am a Pro Change candidate, in fact most of the residents of Central Saanich are for positive change! The desire to improve is part of human nature, just look at the history of civilization. Unfortunately, the decisions in this municipality are driven by a minority, as only 25% of the population comes out to vote. Of that 25%, there is a very vocal, determined group that advocates stagnation. The time has come for the silent majority to be
heard.
Stagnation is not an accomplishment and I reject the argument that it’s a zero sum game we’re playing pitting farmland versus houses and business. I believe in Central Saanich, the Land of Plenty, we can have it all. From beautiful vibrant farmland, to bustling commercial centers, thriving industrial sectors and picturesque suburbs.
I would love to elaborate more , but Scott and Andrew want to get their 2 cents in here as well! So I invite all of you to visit the website
(www.seanformayor.com) and view the Campaign Platform.
If you have any feedback, it would be appreciated!
Happy New Year,
Sean

I had the opportunity to play golf a couple of weeks ago with a student of mine. Conditions were wet (which certainly comes as no surprise), but I immediately noticed he was not taking advantage of perhaps the most important rule of golf in the winter season, that being “winter rules”. What are winter rules… Perhaps the big one is the players’ right to improve his/her lie on the golf course “through the green”. This expression simply means anywhere on the golf course except within the confines of a hazard. Hazard of course refers to any area within red or yellow stakes or in a sand trap. So whenever I play and winter rules are in effect I improve my lie to the very best of my advantage. In many cases winter rules allows the player to lift, clean, and place a ball. This is a very big deal and can really help especially in the rough. Why do I do it……simply put…..the rules of golf say I can! I tell all my students that the rules of golf can help you too. Take what is given; believe me the game is tough
enough!!!!
The second “biggy” is casual water. The rules of golf allow the player to move away from casual water. That being a collection of water which would not be there, except in very wet conditions. The rule allows the player to move his/her ball to the nearest point of relief. I personally do not play from very wet ground. I move my ball to drier ground…why? Because the rules of golf allow me to!
In closing perhaps I might conclude by saying, knowing the rules can save you strokes. For more info regarding rules check out the RCGA, or the BCGA web-site. All good stuff! Knowing the game can only improve your
performance.

HANDICAP SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE!

A New Year is upon us. In only a few months we will all be tearing up the links and trying to get our games in good shape for the summer. I going to list some critical things that need to be done so that your game is as good as possible come the start of the golf season. Treat these things as new year’s resolutions for your golf
game:
EQUIPMENT CHECK- Take a look at all your clubs, and ensure that they are in good shape. Check all the grooves of your irons and wedges to ensure they are clean. If not, use a wire brush or a golf tee, to clean them out. It doesn’t hurt to get some good old fashioned soap and water, with steel wool, and give every club, INCLUDING THE GRIPS, a good scrubbing down before the season starts.
YOU! - Take stock of where you’re at with your health. Are you feeling loose and limber, ready to swing a club dynamically and athletically? Or are you feeling like you still haven’t worked off Aunt Martha’s Christmas Ham? The golf motion requires all of your body, so if there are any parts that feel stiff or weak, it might be time to hit the gym, or simply begin a general stretching program. If you have any questions about this feel free
to come and see us!
GOLF SWING - We have mentioned the golf swing fundamentals many times in past issues, but it’s ALWAYS good to review
them and ensure that you’ve got a good feel for them. They are: GRIP, STANCE, POSTURE, and proper ALIGNMENT to the target. Watch for future articles where we will go into these fundamentals in greater detail and
depth.
SHORT GAME- Short game! Short game! Short game! This is where golf is won and
lost and where your handicap will really drop. The basic short game shots are: Putting, Chipping, Pitching, and Sand Play. Practice these shots over and over on the driving range and practice green so that they’re second nature and easily transferred to the course. Again, watch for future articles where we get into these components a little bit further.
Why don’t we make a deal with ourselves to make some New Year’s Resolutions that we’ll actually
keep by committing to working hard on our golf games this year. We might not ever get around to cleaning those old newspapers in the garage, or finishing that extension on the deck, but at least we’ll be able to get up-and-down from a tough lie in a greenside bunker, and save par!
