The level of golf on the PGA tour is as high as it’s ever been. Junior golf in the United States and Canada is developing at a fast pace. The LPGA tour is getting more competitive each year. Golfers as a whole are bigger, stronger and more technically sound. There are more “perfect” swings on the various tours throughout the world today, then at any time in golf history. Why is that? Many factors can be attributed to this, but I think that it comes down to our knowledge of the golf swing as instructors, and our use of video technology. Video technology has come a long way in the last 10 years, and it has proven to be an invaluable teaching tool for most PGA and CPGA instructors.

From David Leadbetter, to Jim McClean, and Rick Smith, they all use video technology to some degree. ASTAR and V1 were companies that revolutionized video teaching technology. They were the first to incorporate the split-screen where a golfer could be paired, side-by-side next to some of the best golfers in the world, and be compared at different positions both from a side view and a head on view. There was also the capability of drawing lines and circles and basically anything visual to increase the student’s awareness of what they’re doing, and what they need to be doing. Island View has an affiliation with Virtually Perfect Golf, a system that actually compares a golfer’s swing to that of a “model” virtual image, and uses video technology and drawing tools to show a student where their swings are flawed, and what areas need to be addressed. Video technology is so advanced now, and the camera shutter speeds are so fast that someone can see every inch of their swing. With the help of a qualified CPGA professional, a golfer’s swing can be quickly diagnosed, and they can be guided to fixes in their swing which will be solid, and long lasting.

So when you’re watching the Masters this month, and you see Tiger, Ernie, and Vijay hitting those long drives, and the majestically soaring long irons onto the lightning fast greens, remember that their games didn’t develop by accident. They have put in countless hours on the range building and grooving their swings. And guess what? Video instruction/analysis would have played a huge part in creating the perfect swings we see on television week in and week out!

HANDICAP SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE!

When I go to the practice tee with a new student my primary thoughts are to initially check out what I call the basic fundamentals of his or her swing. After a couple of practice swings it usually is very apparent where the weaknesses are and what needs to be modified. I like using a camera a lot because many students just don’t believe it until they see it.

In order of preference I always start with grip. It always seems to be an area which needs to be tidied up or adjusted. Just about all golf books start with the grip. This should come as no big surprise. The attachment of you to the club is the very start of the game. Generally people do not like the sensation of changing their grip, but frankly without a decent grip the rest of the swing usually has little chance of performing correctly.

Next is posture, the positioning of the body over the ball. There is no question if the body is not in the appropriate position very little of the swing will work together. Always remember you are looking for an athletic positioning. Believe me, if your set-up is athletically balanced your chances for success are just that much greater. Very little success is found (in any athletic endeavor) operating from a non-balanced awkward position. We have all heard it said before, “he/she makes it look so easy”; that is what balance is all about.

My last basic is alignment! Where oh where are you going? It should be obvious to all, if you are not pointing the club at the target, why should the ball co-operate. I have taught many folks who have the club aimed in one direction, their feet another and their body lines in another. A whole pile of contradictions; a total recipe for crooked shots. The fundamental of alignment is an essential ingredient to your game.

Cheers,

Scott

QUOTES OF THE MONTH:

-In life, those that are great are those that dare to follow their dreams through the good times AND the bad times.

-Success seems to be connected with action. Successful men keep moving; they make mistakes, but they do not quit.

Conrad Hilton

-He who conquers others is strong. He who conquers himself is mighty.

Lao Tzu

-Your current situation is no indication of your ultimate potential.

Anthony Robbins

-The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

What a dull March, this weather has me longing for a return visit to Hawaii! I was very encouraged to still see our avid members and other valuable customers coming out and getting their golf game in shape. It’ll show out on the links once the weather turns!

I’ve been getting some more practice than normal myself as I just bought a new set of Titleist Clubs. I did it right this time and had them custom fitted for my swing (as Hyo Sang recommended in March’s issue). Has it ever made a difference! I’m not miss hitting the ball nearly as much and I shot my best front 9 at Glen Meadows of 3 over par. Anyone playing in the amateur tournaments this year watch out!

Another item to look forward to once the weather turns is our “Golf Ball Guarantee”. We have 26 000 brand new, 2 piece, yellow and black Top Flight range balls in storage waiting to be drove to the back green! I wanted to put them out March 15th, but the range is still too wet. Let us know what you think once they’re in service!

I’ve added more offerings including Free Wireless Internet, a Take Home DVD for Lessons, Two Clinics in April, and the RCGA Handicap Card system with the goal to make our facility more enticing and get your golf game in shape. The DVD is especially helpful as you can take it home and study it or show your friends how excellent your swing has become since you started practicing!

We’re hosting a Saanich Peninsula business mixer Thursday, April 26th from 5pm – 7pm. I encourage anyone in business (employees and employers) to attend, as it will be the best mixer of the year, and a great opportunity to meet some interesting people. Island View will be reserving the top deck for this function, with snacks, drinks and range balls! The Peninsula Chamber has great events all year round and is working hard on behalf of the businesses of the chamber. Check them out on the web at www.peninsulachamber.ca.

Island View has an action packed April for everyone out there on the Peninsula and Greater Victoria, be sure to swing on by!

There is lots of new equipment on the market to help us play better golf. Big names like Nike, TaylorMade, Callaway, and Titleist came out with drivers and irons that are made with the newest technology which will offer us the maximum forgiveness, and that means more distance and more accuracy. However, there still is many golfers who do not take advantage of getting new clubs and keep wanting to hit the ball straighter and further. It would be in everyone’s best interest to take advantage of having new clubs. Don’t get me wrong; the golf swing is much more important than the club, but what the newest technology can do to your game is something you can not ignore.

Go visit your local golf shop and try out the newest technologies in golf and see for yourself!
